Summary

Prepare yourself for something unlike anything: A smash-up of art and text for teens that viscerally captures what it is to be Black。 In America。 Right Now。 Written by #1 New York Times bestselling and award-winning author Jason Reynolds。

Jason Reynolds and his best bud, Jason Griffin had a mind-meld。 And they decided to tackle it, in one fell swoop, in about ten sentences, and 300 pages of art, this piece, this contemplation-manifesto-fierce-vulnerable-gorgeous-terrifying-WhatIsWrongWithHumans-hope-filled-hopeful-searing-Eye-Poppingly-Illustrated-tender-heartbreaking-how-The-HECK-did-They-Come-UP-with-This project about oxygen。 And all of the symbolism attached to that word, especially NOW。

And so for anyone who didn’t really know what it means to not be able to breathe, REALLY breathe, for generations, now you know。 And those who already do, you’ll be nodding yep yep, that is exactly how it is。

Rating: 3。4I really thought this was going to be a "normal" read, with the same old structure of a book。 I was very surprised to find out that this was not the case and that the book was WAY more different than I expected。 I still enjoyed the read and even reread it in a span of 2 hours。 It is a very quick read, and by very, I mean VERY quick。 It speaks volume about 2020 and covid and how black people were treated and how the news treated everything。 At first I didn't understand what this book w Rating: 3。4I really thought this was going to be a "normal" read, with the same old structure of a book。 I was very surprised to find out that this was not the case and that the book was WAY more different than I expected。 I still enjoyed the read and even reread it in a span of 2 hours。 It is a very quick read, and by very, I mean VERY quick。 It speaks volume about 2020 and covid and how black people were treated and how the news treated everything。 At first I didn't understand what this book was trying to convey, but then the reread really helped and it all clicked and I understood。 I liked the book, but I didn't love it。 。。。more

Y’all。 The tears haven’t dried on my face yet。 I don’t have words to do it justice, but please read this work of art, and take your time。 Every page is a gift。

In through the nose… out through the mouth。Easily a book that I will pick up over and over again。

How can one book with so few words contain the past, present, and future with such power, simplicity, and a touch of humor? One name: Jason Reynolds。 I’m gobsmacked。This is a book about specific things and everything。 It’s also a guide to help you find your way。 Read it。

We ALL need to read this one。。。remember what hope feels like? 💕

In Elijah's words, this is a "startlingly beautiful book。" It's something you can read in 15 minutes standing in the bookstore, but I think it deserves more attention than that。 I would love to use it in my classroom as a mentor text for a poetry unit。 In Elijah's words, this is a "startlingly beautiful book。" It's something you can read in 15 minutes standing in the bookstore, but I think it deserves more attention than that。 I would love to use it in my classroom as a mentor text for a poetry unit。 。。。more

This took my breath away。

I’m so excited to show teens this book and for teachers of all kinds to get it into their classrooms! It’s a snapshot of the muchness of 2020 in particular and “the times we live in” in general, but more than that, it’s expressive and textural and colorful and unconcerned with perfection。 I want young people to know that art and poetry (and collaboration!) can look like THIS。

Amazing!

I'm so glad that I read a description of this book, I think by Jason Reynolds, that caught my attention and made me go read it RIGHT NOW, in about a half hour。 I spent the entire time with tears in my eyes。 Maybe even a little more poignant because I was listening to my husband cough from his quarantine room, and I have no doubt he will be fine, but how many people were trapped in huge cities and tiny rooms wondering if a breath would be someone's last? The way the artwork and words went together blew my mind。 Awesome and inspiring book。

Heartbreaking and hopeful, thought provoking and beautifully done。 This book is so timely! It touches upon the year 2020 and everything that we endured that year。 Coronavirus and George Floyd (and others), it was tough, yet we persevered。 This book has 3 sentences and 300 pages。 It is heavy, literally and figuratively。 Let's change the channel and do something。 Remember to treat each other with kindness! Jason Reynolds does it again。 3 sentences。 That’s it。 Illustrator Jason Griffin turns those 3 elongated sentences into 300 pages, with illustrations so compelling, vivid, and creative they just might win him the 2023 Caldecott。

Wow…this book say so, so much with so few words。 If, like me, you are an American who has been living through a global pandemic amid a time of the 24 hour news cycle, the constant social media, the barrage of injustices and cruelties that are just now coming to light despite tragic years and years worth of attempts to fight against them…this will make you feel heard。 This is a perfect, heart wrenching, quietly hopeful read。

Candice

A few sentences of pure power。

Mary

Amazing。 Mind blowing。 The most unique, amazing, wonderful, best thing I’ve ever read。

This book was amazing! It brought me through 3 rounds of emotions。 The illustrations are perfect。 The way the whole book came together was perfect。 Even down to how they created the book jacket and even the book cover。 Amazing touches。

THE ART!!!! Such a beautiful new novel, I think a lot of what Jason Reynolds said in this book was a lot what everyone felt in 2020。 A quick read for sure, but taking time to appreciate the art and decipher all of the imagery is worth it 100%。

Emily

Truly beautiful。

I found this magnificent work in a bookstore, sat down in one of the plush chairs, and finished it in one sitting。 In the hour it took to read (absorb is a better word) Ain't Burned All the Brights reeled me in, bringing tears to my eyes and a feeling of warmth to my chest。 Daunting, yet hopeful。 You won't regret reading it。 I found this magnificent work in a bookstore, sat down in one of the plush chairs, and finished it in one sitting。 In the hour it took to read (absorb is a better word) Ain't Burned All the Brights reeled me in, bringing tears to my eyes and a feeling of warmth to my chest。 Daunting, yet hopeful。 You won't regret reading it。 。。。more

Jason Reynolds and Jason Griffin combine talents to create a 3 sentence, 300 page book that represents the story of a family going through the covid-19 pandemic。 A story told in 3 breaths lets the reader watch the progress of a family deal with the trauma, acceptance and healing of the year。 Looking for an oxygen mask to help his family, Jason finds it in the beginning of a smile on his mom's face。 Very bold and bright illustrations。 A real page turner, that you want to read multiple times。 Reco Jason Reynolds and Jason Griffin combine talents to create a 3 sentence, 300 page book that represents the story of a family going through the covid-19 pandemic。 A story told in 3 breaths lets the reader watch the progress of a family deal with the trauma, acceptance and healing of the year。 Looking for an oxygen mask to help his family, Jason finds it in the beginning of a smile on his mom's face。 Very bold and bright illustrations。 A real page turner, that you want to read multiple times。 Recommended grade 5 + or as a read aloud grades 3+, inspiration for artists and readers of free verseTopics: struggle, trauma, family, survival, hope 。。。more

Jason Reynolds and his artistic friend, Jason Griffin collaborated on this 300 page book of incredible art and only 10 sentences that resulted in one of the most unique books I have ever read。 As a white woman, I can only imagine what it was like being part of a black family during the insane year that was 2020。 This project offers a window into that experience that left me sad, angry, scared, and yet hopeful。 The theme (and symbolism) of oxygen and breath is woven so creatively throughout this Jason Reynolds and his artistic friend, Jason Griffin collaborated on this 300 page book of incredible art and only 10 sentences that resulted in one of the most unique books I have ever read。 As a white woman, I can only imagine what it was like being part of a black family during the insane year that was 2020。 This project offers a window into that experience that left me sad, angry, scared, and yet hopeful。 The theme (and symbolism) of oxygen and breath is woven so creatively throughout this book-something most of us take for granted, and yet too many of our brothers and sisters cannot。 You'll be tempted to fly through this book, as you are pulled in, but give yourself time for rereading and savoring the incredible merging of a few powerful words with astonishing artwork。 It is like nothing you've ever read/seen before。 。。。more
